Game Analysis
The Lions are the second highest scoring offense in points per game, and the Bucs are 6th. The Bucs have scored 25+ points in each of their last 4 games, while allowing an average of 29 points per game. The Lions scored 34+ points in 4 of their last 5 games, and the Lions offense is significantly more efficient at home. Both teams rank in the bottom third of the leagues in defense. Both teams rank in the top 10 in not allowing sacks, at just 1.5 per game for both teams. The Lions are also top 3 in fewest offensive holding penalties. Sacks and holding penalties are offensive drive killers, and both of these teams are good at avoiding those. This has the makings of a shootout. Lots of explosive plays, TDs and not FGs, and going for it on 4th down rather than punting (the Dan Campbell special). One big advantage for the Lions is red zone efficiency. The Lions rank 3rd, and the Bucs defense ranks 27th. The Bucs are missing some offensive weapons (although Mike Evans is likely going to play), but the Lions are missing the entire starting secondary. The Bucs and Baker have been cooking (bad pun) even with all these injuries. The Lions are 20-9 ATS under Dan Campbell coming off of a loss. The GridironAI model projects 59 total points to be scored! I'm on the Over. I was leaning Lions -4.5, but that line moved up to Lions -6 today. The GridironAI spread model has this right at 50/50. I still lean Lions, but that's not an official play.
The Texans seemed to have righted their ship, with 2 dominating wins after an 0-3 start. The offense struggled in the first 3 games, but put up big numbers against the Titans and Ravens, albeit 2 bad defenses. The Texans has been unbelieable this season, allowing just 12 points per game, lowest in the league by a wide margin, and in line with all-time great defenses like Da 1985 Bearsss. The defense ranks top 3 in yards allowed per game, and is top 10 against both the pass and run. But they are middle of the pack in terms of sacks and turnovers forced. So how are they holding teams to just 12 points per game? For starters they don't let their opponents get to the redzone, and when they do, they only give up an average of 2.2 points, which is 3rd best in the league. Texans opponents are averaging 5.2 punts per game, 2nd highest in the league. They also play at a really slow pace (like Virginia basketball). The Texans and the Seahawks are among the slowest teams in terms of number of offensive plays per game. The Seahawks have been a pleasant surprise with their 4-2 and start. But their offensive performance has been buoyed by the fact that they haven't played against top 10 defense this year. As we approach Halloween, I think Sam Darnold will turn back into a pumpkin against the Texans defense. Taking a look at the GridironAI models. For the Moneyline, the main model has Seabags at 51%, but the secondary models actually have Texans as high as 56%. The spread models all favor Texans +3, as high as 62% on the main model. The team scoring model projects a really low scoring game of 18-15 in favor of the Seachickens. I'm on the Texans, splitting action between the Moneyline and spread, and the Under.
