The Panthers are one of the biggest suprises this season. With a pre-season win total of 6.5, they are just one win away from that, with a record of 6-5. And one of those losses was with Andy Dalton as QB. Now they visit Santa Clara to take on the 49ers. The Panthers have the 6th worst passing offense in league. But they have been much more effective on the ground, with a top 10 ground game. The 49ers pass defense is allowing the 5th most yards per game, so this should play in the Panthers favor. Plus the 49ers defense hasn't been nearly as good since Nick Bosa and Fred Warner landed on the IR. When you exclude the first 3 games of the season when both of those guys played, the 49ers are giving up an average of 278 passing yards per game, which would rank dead last by a wide margin. Now, Bryce Young isn't exactly an elite QB, or even a good QB for that matter. But I don't need him to put up Matthew Stafford numbers against this defense. Just for him to be serviceable. The 49ers have a new kicker this week. Starting kicker Eddy Pineiro is hurt, and the 49ers signed Matt Gay, who was cut by the Commanders last week, as their kicker. Pineiro is 6-6 on FGs over 50 yards this season. Gay is 4-9. So that certainly is a step down in terms of reliability for long kicks. All these factors have me on the Panthers +7.5.
