Texans at Patriots. People are riding high on the Texans after their defense demolished the Steelers last week. But let's face it, the Steeler stunk, and Aaron Rodgers showed his age and lack of mobility in the pocket. Now they face a mobile QB that is half that age, in the cold weather again. Of course the Texans have the #1 defense in both yards allow and points allowed, but the Patriots aren't far behind at #8 and #4, respectively, albeit they did have a powder puff schedule. The Patriots offense is also significantly better than the Texans. The Patriots rank #3 in yards per game, compared to #17 for the Texans. CJ Stroud has played very badly in his handful of cold weather games. Before last week, both of his playoff wins were in domes or warm weather, and he lost both of his outdoor cold weather starts. He had 1 cold weather regular season start in 2024, and he threw 2 interceptions. Even though the Texas won last week in cold weather Pittsburgh, it was entirely because of the defense. Stroud's numbers were average, 21/32 for 250 yards, 1 TD, 1 Int, against an awful Steelers defense that was 7th to last in yards allowed per game. Plus, the Texans will be without #1 WR, Nico Collins. I expect Stroud to have an absolutely abysmal game. The Texans defense will put pressure on the Patriots and which may force some mistakes. But Drake Maye is a mobile QB who can step up in the pocket and take off. Maye had the 4th more rushing yards of QBs this season. 53% of the GridironAI models like the Patriots to cover 3 points, and the team scoring models projects 41 total points (23-18 Patriots) supporting our play on the Patriots, and in line with the game total of 40.5.
Rams at Bears. This should be a fun game. And freezing. The weather is supposed to be around 15 degrees, with a windchill close to 0. This should favor the Bears, who have played several games in the past month in the cold weather. The warm weather LA Rams, might not look the same in these conditions. Matthew Stafford has struggled in frigid temperatures throughout his career. We have 2 high powered offenses; the Rams rank #1 in yards and points per game and the Bears rank #6 and #9, respectively. Neither defense is great. The Bears rank 4th to last in yards allowed and the Rams are middle of the pack. The Bears strength on defense is forcing turnovers, where they ranked #1 with 33. The Rams, also very good, at #5 with 26. Statistically, the Rams have slight edges on offense and defense, but not 4 points worth, especially with the Bears at home in the cold weather. I think this line should be closer to a pick-em or maybe Rams -1. So I'm happy to take the 4 points, as I expect a close game and wouldn't be surprised if the heart-attack Bears pulled off another 4th quarter miracle. 86% of the GridironAI spread models like the Bears to cover with 3.5 points, and now we get the extra half point to 4. The GridironAI team scoring model projects a score of 25-23 Bears, which is right in line with the game total of 48.5, and supports our side of the Bears.
